Learning Support Centre

Pupils who hold a Statement of Educational Needs for moderate learning difficulties (MLD) are taught in small groups in Years 8-12, studying the full range of subjects in the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

The Learning Support Centre is supported by three members of the teaching staff and three classroom assistants. Individual pupils with particular special needs are supported by additional classroom/domestic assistants.

It is a wholly new facility, opened in June 1999 and comprises a suite of rooms, fully equipped with the latest computer hardware, software and audiovisual equipment. The centre also incorporates a fully equipped kitchen for the delivery of lifeskills and is equipped to facilitate wheelchair users.

Library

St. Patrick's College Library is a light airy room situated on the first floor. The library which is opened from 8.30am until 4.45pm is an information retrieval resource for the whole school ie. staff and pupils. Years 8 and 9 are given a library period weekly in which they can exchange books and work on projects.

The Library is also an ICT base for independent research and study for students, particularly those in Years 13 and 14.

The Library staff has for the past few years been overseeing the collection of loose change from the pupils. This is collected on a weekly basis and donated to Newry Hospice. Last year £2500 was raised in this way.
